Mangaluru: Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL), in association with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), organised a beach cleaning campaign at Iddya Beach near Surathkal on June 2, 2026, as part of the observance of World Environment Day 2026.

The initiative aimed to promote environmental awareness and encourage community participation in protecting coastal ecosystems from pollution and waste accumulation.

More than 150 volunteers, including MRPL employees, students, environmental officials, and community representatives, participated in the cleanliness drive.

Environmental officials lead awareness initiative

The programme was graced by Shri Rajshekar Puranik, Senior Environmental Officer, KSPCB, Mangaluru, as the Chief Guest.

Dr. Manju R., Environmental Officer, KSPCB, Mangaluru, attended the event as a special invitee.

Members of the Nagarika Salaha Samithi, Surathkal, led by Shri Satish Sadanand, actively participated in the campaign along with students from Govinda Dasa College and officials from MRPL.

The gathering highlighted the importance of collective action in preserving coastal environments and promoting sustainable practices.

Senior officials from MRPL were present during the programme, including Mr. H. S. Rajeev, Group General Manager (HSE); Mr. Krishna Pillai Anil Kumar, Chief General Manager (HSE); Mr. Prasanna Kumar T., General Manager (HSE); and Mr. Rajendra Acharya, General Manager (HSE).

The officials joined volunteers in the beach cleaning activities and reiterated MRPL’s commitment towards environmental sustainability and community engagement.

Campaign focuses on protecting marine ecosystems

The beach cleaning campaign was organised to create awareness about environmental pollution and its adverse effects on marine life and coastal ecosystems.

Participants collected waste materials from the shoreline while spreading awareness on responsible waste disposal, environmental conservation, and the importance of maintaining clean coastal areas.

Organisers stated that such initiatives play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity, reducing pollution, and encouraging public participation in environmental protection efforts.

The programme formed part of MRPL’s broader World Environment Day celebrations and reflected the company’s commitment towards sustainable development and environmental stewardship.
