Beltangady: A nearly 12-foot-long king cobra was rescued from the garden of a resident at Kading in Tenkakarandur village after it was found in the process of swallowing a python.
The incident occurred on Friday evening, September 11, when the family of Hitesh, a resident of Kading, spotted the giant king cobra in their garden. Alarmed by the sight, the family immediately sought the assistance of a local snake rescuer.
Snake rescuer reaches spot
The family contacted Snake Ashok, a snake rescuer from Layila, who promptly arrived at the location after receiving the information.
On reaching the garden, Ashok inspected the situation and assessed the position of the king cobra. Necessary precautions were taken during the operation to ensure the safety of the family members and others present at the spot.
The large size of the snake and the fact that it was in the process of consuming a python made the rescue operation particularly challenging.
Cobra regurgitates python during rescue
During the rescue operation, the king cobra regurgitated the python it had swallowed.
The rescuer subsequently managed to capture the king cobra safely without causing harm to the reptile or putting people in the vicinity at risk.
The snake was then transported away from the residential area and taken to a forest region suitable for its natural habitat.

After the rescue, the nearly 12-foot-long king cobra was released safely into the forest.
The incident highlights the presence of wildlife in areas close to human habitation in the Beltangady region. The appearance of a large king cobra in a residential garden also underlines the importance of seeking assistance from trained snake rescuers rather than attempting to approach or handle such reptiles.
Residents are generally advised to maintain a safe distance when snakes are spotted and immediately contact trained rescuers or the concerned forest authorities.
