In a bid to tackle the rampant issue of waste disposal in public areas of Neermarga, Mangaluru taluk, local authorities have launched a stringent campaign. Gram panchayats in Dakshina Kannada district have spearheaded this initiative aimed at identifying and penalizing individuals who carelessly discard waste.
Task Force Mobilized for Cleanliness
A dedicated task force, comprising officials and elected representatives within the gram panchayat, has been deployed to inspect waste heaps in public spaces. Their objective is to identify any clues, such as names or addresses, from items like courier/post covers, bills, or documents found amidst the litter.
Enforcement and Fines
Upon discovering relevant information, officials visit the residences of the violators to impose fines. The campaign’s inaugural day saw the Neermarga gram panchayat uncover details of nine individuals guilty of dumping waste in public areas within the village.
Persistent Challenges Despite Efforts
Despite regular door-to-door waste collection efforts covering all 1,500 houses in Neermarga, littering in public spaces remains a challenge. The installation of CCTV cameras has not deterred people from littering, resulting in the persistence of garbage black spots.
Ongoing Efforts and Collaboration
With support from the taluk panchayat and zilla panchayat, the gram panchayat is committed to sustaining this cleanliness drive. The collaboration involves various stakeholders, including the gram panchayat president, taluk panchayat executive officer, assistant director, and staff.
Future Plans for Waste Management
Currently, waste from Neermarga is transported to Pachanady dumpyard with authorization from the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC). However, plans are underway to establish a solid waste management unit within the village soon.
Broader Implementation
In a broader effort to address cleanliness issues, the Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat CEO has instructed all executive officers in the district to form special task forces dedicated to cleanliness at the village level.
