Overnight heavy rainfall lashed Mangaluru, leading to widespread waterlogging in various parts of the city. Low-lying areas such as Idya near Suratkal, Mission Street, Rao and Rao Circle, Koppara Hitlu, and nearby localities were submerged in the early hours of Friday.
With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing an orange alert for the region, the district authorities responded by announcing a holiday for all educational institutions. This included Anganwadis, government-run and aided schools, as well as private primary and high schools.
In several locations, water gushed into residences, commercial spaces, and public establishments, leaving citizens stranded and causing property damage. Locals blamed poor urban infrastructure and improper drainage systems for the sudden flooding.
Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) district president B. K. Imthiyaz criticised the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), attributing the flash floods to poorly planned civic projects. According to him, MCC’s unscientific development work aggravated the rain-induced crisis.
Frustrated residents reported that emergency officers designated by the corporation and district officials failed to respond promptly to distress calls. One resident from Idya lamented the lack of support during the chaos.
Imthiyaz confirmed that volunteers and members of DYFI had to intervene and move several affected families from waterlogged homes to safer locations.
The incident has reignited concerns over inadequate monsoon preparedness and the need for long-term flood mitigation in Mangaluru.
