Mangaluru: The ninth edition of the much-anticipated Mangaluru Kambala, one of the most iconic rural sporting festivals of coastal Karnataka, was inaugurated with grandeur and traditional fervour at Bangra Kulur Gold Finch City, Bangra Kulur, on Saturday, December 27. The event witnessed an overwhelming turnout of kambala enthusiasts, cultural patrons, sport lovers, and members of the public, reflecting the deep emotional and cultural connect the festival enjoys in Tulunadu.
The prestigious event was formally inaugurated by Member of Parliament Capt Brijesh Chowta, who marked the opening ceremony in the presence of several dignitaries from social, cultural, and business backgrounds. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as the traditional sport, rooted deeply in agrarian life and folk traditions, once again came alive on the specially prepared kambala track.
Kambala as a symbol of Tulunadu’s living heritage
Addressing the gathering, Capt Brijesh Chowta highlighted the cultural and social importance of kambala, stating that it is not merely a sporting event but a vibrant celebration of Tulunadu’s rich traditions and heritage. He emphasised that kambala symbolises the inseparable bond between the land, its people, and age-old customs that have been preserved and passed down through generations.
Capt Chowta stressed the need to protect and promote indigenous folk sports like kambala in the face of rapid urbanisation and changing lifestyles. He noted that such events play a crucial role in keeping traditional knowledge systems, rural sportsmanship, and community values alive among younger generations. His address was met with warm applause from the large gathering present at the venue.
‘Nava Vidha – Nava Varshada Mangaluru Kambala’ theme highlighted
Referring to the theme of this year’s event, ‘Nava Vidha – Nava Varshada Mangaluru Kambala’, Capt Chowta said the 2025 edition holds special significance for the region. He observed that Tulunadu is witnessing a positive transformation, with many young achiever entrepreneurs returning to their native land after gaining experience elsewhere.
According to him, these entrepreneurs, driven by love for their roots and cultural identity, have established successful ventures in and around Mangaluru, thereby contributing to employment generation and regional development. He described this trend as a promising sign for the future of the region and aligned it with the spirit of renewal and progress reflected in the theme of this year’s kambala.
Dignitaries grace the inaugural ceremony
Several prominent personalities from social, cultural, and business fields were present on the dais, adding dignity and stature to the inauguration ceremony. While some dignitaries chose to maintain a low profile, their silent presence and support were seen as a strong endorsement of the event and its organisers.
Their participation reflected the broad-based support that Mangaluru Kambala enjoys across various sections of society, cutting across political, social, and economic boundaries.
Dr K Prakash Shetty’s continued support acknowledged
The event is being held under the honorary presidency of Dr K Prakash Shetty, chairman of the MRG Group, who has been a consistent supporter of Mangaluru Kambala for the past eight years. His sustained encouragement and patronage have played a vital role in strengthening the organisational framework of the event and enhancing its stature year after year.
Organisers acknowledged that Dr Shetty’s commitment has helped Mangaluru Kambala evolve into one of the most professionally managed kambala events in the region, attracting participants, spectators, and cultural enthusiasts from across Karnataka and neighbouring states.
Cultural programmes and prize distribution
Mangaluru Kambala is not limited to buffalo racing alone but is also a celebration of local art forms and cultural expressions. A grand stage programme featuring traditional cultural performances, folk dances, music, and felicitation ceremonies was scheduled to be held on Saturday evening, December 27.
The prize distribution ceremony will take place on Sunday morning, December 28, where winners and participants will be honoured for their sporting excellence and dedication. Elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure safety, crowd management, and smooth conduct of the event.
A celebration of tradition and modern vision
The ninth edition of Mangaluru Kambala once again showcased the region’s ability to blend tradition with contemporary vision. The event stands as a powerful symbol of Tulunadu’s living heritage, evoking pride, unity, and enthusiasm among the people.
