Mangaluru — At a grievance redressal meeting for Scheduled Castes and Tribes held at the city police commissioner’s office, Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy and Superintendent of Police Dr Arun K assured firm action against illegal sand mining and unauthorised DJ usage in Dakshina Kannada district.
Strict Stand on Illegal Sand Use
Dr Arun emphasized that there is an ample supply of non-Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) sand — nearly double the current demand — available through the district’s official booking app. He warned that the preference for CRZ sand often involves illegal practices and unaccounted money, and authorities will crack down on such activities.
Alleged Abuse at Shelter Home
Dalit leader S.P. Anand raised serious allegations of abuse, claiming that a man named Yadav was forcibly detained at the Pachchanady shelter home and subjected to harassment and forced labour. Assistant Director Suresh Adiga confirmed that an investigation is underway.
Helmet Rule Enforcement Temporarily Eased
Citizens flagged concerns over relaxed helmet enforcement. ACP (Traffic) Najma Farooqi clarified that, due to monsoon risks, on-road checks have been scaled down, with a shift toward camera-based monitoring. DCP Mithun H.N. cited a recent accident in Mandya as the reason for caution.
Festival Sound Limits Enforced
Commissioner Reddy reiterated that festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and Janmashtami must end by 10:30 PM, and DJ usage beyond that time is strictly prohibited. Public can report violations via the police control room or emergency number 112.
Opposition to Kudubi Inclusion in SC List
Dalit representatives, including Anand, opposed proposals to include the Kudubi community in the Scheduled Caste category, arguing it would disadvantage existing SC/ST groups.
Call for Equal Treatment and Better Monitoring
Activists demanded respectful, unbiased treatment in police stations and prompt response to caste-based crimes. Concerns were also raised over the functioning and data security of CCTVs in Dalit colonies. Police officials promised audits and action.
DCPs Ravishankar and Mithun, along with inspector Vidyadhar, participated in the meeting. Several citizens, including Chandrakumar and Amal Jyothi, also voiced concerns.
