On July 29, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) initiated ‘Operation Tiger,’ a crackdown on unauthorized street food vendors in the Mannagudda area and along Airport Road near Karnataka Polytechnic. This operation led to the clearing of Mangaluru’s renowned food street in Mannagudda, previously a bustling hub of activity.
Around 30 illegal stalls were removed during the operation, targeting vendors selling fast food items such as fish dishes, chaats, and egg preparations. The drive was led by Deputy Commissioner Rekha Shetty, Health Officer Dr. Manjaiah Shetty, and officials from the revenue department. Security and crowd control were managed by personnel from Barke and Kadri police stations.
This enforcement action followed a promise by Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur to address increasing public complaints about street vendors obstructing pedestrian movement and posing potential health risks. Residents had raised concerns about the impact of these vendors on public safety and hygiene.
During the operation, four individuals who attempted to protest the clearance were detained by police. The MCC emphasized the need to enforce municipal regulations and maintain order.
‘Operation Tiger’ is part of a broader campaign aimed at regulating street vending and upholding the city’s safety standards. This initiative reflects the MCC’s commitment to improving the urban environment and addressing residents’ concerns.
