Mangaluru: Alert passengers aboard the Mumbai–Mangaluru Express overpowered a youth who allegedly attempted to rob passengers by threatening them with a knife before handing him over to the Goa Police. The incident, which unfolded during the train journey on Thursday, also exposed the alleged operation of a gang targeting passengers on long-distance trains.

The suspect was caught after passengers chased him through the train coach and disarmed him following a brief struggle. Railway staff later took custody of the accused and handed him over to the Goa Police for further investigation.

The incident highlights the presence of mind shown by passengers, whose swift action prevented what could have turned into a serious robbery inside the moving train.

Suspicious behaviour raises alarm

The incident occurred while the Mumbai–Mangaluru Express was travelling between Karmali railway station in Maharashtra and a railway station in Goa.

According to available information, the youth was noticed moving suspiciously inside one of the coaches. His behaviour attracted the attention of railway ticket collector Laxman Pawar, who approached him for questioning.

Instead of responding, the suspect allegedly fled through the coach, prompting railway staff and passengers to suspect foul play.

His sudden attempt to escape triggered a chase inside the train.

Passengers chase and catch suspect

Several alert passengers immediately joined the pursuit and managed to corner the youth before he could escape.

Among those who played a key role were Nagaraj Poojary from Kundapur, Vadiraj Surathkal and Manjunath Shanthi, who, along with other passengers, successfully restrained the suspect.

During the confrontation, the youth allegedly pulled out a knife from his pocket and threatened the passengers with serious consequences in an attempt to free himself.

Despite the danger, the passengers continued to hold him down and, after a brief struggle, succeeded in snatching the knife from his possession.

Their prompt action prevented the situation from escalating further and ensured the safety of fellow passengers travelling on the train.

Accused handed over to Goa Police

After the suspect was restrained, railway staff took him into custody and handed him over to the Goa Police for further legal action.

Police are expected to question the accused to ascertain his identity, criminal background and possible involvement in similar incidents reported on long-distance trains.

The knife allegedly used to threaten passengers has also been seized as part of the investigation.

Authorities are expected to examine whether the accused has any previous criminal record or links to organised theft and robbery networks operating on railway routes.

Alleged links to six-member gang

According to information gathered after the incident, the accused reportedly told passengers that he was from Mumbra in Mumbai.

During questioning by passengers after he was caught, he allegedly revealed that he was part of a six-member gang operating on trains.

Sources indicated that while one member was caught, the remaining five members, who were travelling in different coaches, managed to flee immediately after the incident.

The gang is suspected of targeting passengers travelling on the Mumbai–Mangaluru Express and the Matsyagandha Express by taking advantage of crowded coaches and overnight journeys.

Police are verifying these claims as part of their investigation and are likely to examine CCTV footage and statements from passengers and railway personnel.

Vigilance prevents major crime

The incident once again underlines the importance of vigilance among railway passengers and staff.

The quick response by passengers, coupled with the intervention of railway officials, prevented a possible robbery and ensured that the accused was brought under control without further harm to other travellers.

Railway authorities regularly advise passengers to remain alert during journeys, safeguard their belongings and immediately report suspicious individuals or activities to railway staff or the Railway Protection Force.

Conclusion

The swift action of passengers aboard the Mumbai–Mangaluru Express helped foil an alleged robbery attempt and led to the arrest of a knife-wielding suspect. As the Goa Police continue their investigation into the accused and his alleged associates, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of public vigilance and cooperation in ensuring passenger safety during rail travel.
