The PM Vishwakarma (PMVK) scheme, launched in 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has received an enthusiastic response in Dakshina Kannada district. Aimed at supporting artisans and craftspeople reliant on traditional tools and manual labor, the scheme offers free training, daily allowances, and financial assistance.

A total of 2,786 candidates in the district have completed their training across 18 trades, including carpentry, boatmaking, blacksmithing, pottery, tailoring, and traditional basket making. Eleven institutions in the district conduct training sessions, with 91 batches already trained and eight batches currently in progress, comprising 304 candidates.

Pradeep D’Souza, District Skill Development Officer, highlighted tailoring as the most popular course in the district, followed by brick masonry and carpentry. The Karnataka Government Polytechnic (KPT) in Mangaluru has completed its first tailoring course and plans to introduce brick masonry and carpentry programs.

The scheme ensures that beneficiaries, selected after a rigorous evaluation, have prior knowledge of their chosen trade. Training durations range from three weeks to two months, focusing on enhancing skills, adopting new technologies, improving product marketing, communication skills, and inculcating savings habits.

Upon completion, participants receive certificates, enabling them to apply for low-interest loans to start their ventures. “This initiative is also beneficial for those seeking employment abroad, as many skilled workers lack formal certifications,” said KPT Principal Harisha Shetty.

With its holistic approach, PMVK is empowering artisans to preserve traditional crafts while equipping them for modern markets.
