Belthangady: A case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act has been registered at the Belthangady police station against a shop owner for allegedly sexually harassing a minor girl who had visited his shop. The case was registered based on a complaint lodged by the minor, following which the police initiated an investigation into the matter.

Allegations of repeated harassment

According to the complaint, the accused, identified as Tikka Muhammad Gerukatte, allegedly sexually harassed the girl when she visited his shop. The victim has stated that the accused had subjected her to similar harassment on three to four earlier occasions as well.

The complaint further alleged that the accused had threatened the minor not to disclose the incidents to anyone. Due to fear and intimidation, the girl reportedly remained silent initially, before later approaching the authorities with the support of her family.

Attempt to misuse CCTV footage alleged

It has also been alleged that the accused attempted to manipulate CCTV footage from the shop premises. According to police sources, the accused is said to have circulated the footage to others with the intention of portraying the minor girl in a false light, showing her entry and exit from the shop on one occasion.

Investigators are examining whether the footage was edited or misused and are working to retrieve the original recordings for forensic analysis. The alleged attempt to misuse CCTV footage has added a serious dimension to the case, officials said.

Case registered under POCSO Act

Based on the statement of the minor girl, the Belthangady police have registered a case against the accused under relevant sections of the POCSO Act, which deals with sexual offences against children. The Act provides stringent punishment for those found guilty of sexual harassment and related offences involving minors.

Police officials said that the statement of the victim has been recorded following prescribed legal procedures, and efforts are being made to collect additional evidence to strengthen the case.

Investigation continues

The police are continuing their investigation and have begun questioning individuals connected to the case. Officials said that further action would be taken based on the findings of the investigation and the availability of evidence.

Authorities have reiterated that the identity of the minor will be protected as per law. They have also urged parents and guardians to encourage children to report any form of harassment without fear.
