Mangaluru: A police constable was allegedly assaulted by unidentified youths travelling on a two-wheeler during night patrol duty in the city in the early hours of Sunday. The accused reportedly attacked the officer and fled from the location. The incident, which occurred during routine vehicle checks, was captured on a nearby CCTV camera.

Police officials said the incident took place while constables were carrying out surveillance and checking suspicious vehicles as part of regular night patrol operations. The attack has raised concern as it involved an assault on a police officer discharging official duties.

Authorities have registered a case and initiated an investigation to identify and trace the accused persons involved in the incident.

Incident occurred during routine vehicle checking

According to police, two constables were deployed for night patrol duty at around 2 am near Narayana Guru Co-operative Society at Urwa Kodikal. During the patrol, they noticed a two-wheeler moving at a high speed through the area.

The officers signalled the riders to stop for inspection as part of routine verification procedures. However, the youths allegedly ignored the instructions and continued riding away from the spot without stopping.

Police sources said the incident initially appeared to be a case of riders avoiding checking procedures. However, events took a serious turn shortly afterwards.

Youths allegedly returned and attacked officer

Investigators said the youths reportedly returned to the same location after a short interval and allegedly confronted the police personnel.

According to police statements, one of the constables was attacked using a piece of cement sheet before the accused escaped from the area. The sudden attack occurred before officers could react and detain the suspects.

The injured officer attempted to protect himself from the blow during the assault, but sustained injuries in the process.

Police officials are currently examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area as part of efforts to identify the individuals responsible for the attack.

Constable sustains head injury

Sudheer Kumar Reddy stated that the assaulted constable attempted to avoid the impact by bending down when the object was thrown or used against him.

However, despite trying to evade the attack, the officer suffered head injuries. He was subsequently provided medical attention.

Officials have not yet released further details regarding the condition of the injured constable. Authorities said further information will be shared after the ongoing investigation progresses.

Police begin investigation

A case has been registered at Urwa Police Station in connection with the incident.

Investigators are analysing CCTV footage and gathering additional evidence to establish the identity of the suspects and determine the sequence of events leading to the assault.

Police officials stated that action would be taken against those responsible after completion of the investigation. They also emphasised that attacks on law enforcement personnel while carrying out official duties are treated seriously under the law.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by police personnel during routine enforcement and night patrol operations in urban areas.
