Mangaluru: In a landmark step towards rural industrialisation and local empowerment, a new Power Loom Cloth Production Unit was inaugurated at Ambedkar Bhavan, Adyar Padavu. This collaborative initiative between Adyar Gram Panchayat and Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management, Mangaluru, aims to foster self-reliance among rural communities—particularly women—by creating employment and promoting entrepreneurship.

The inauguration ceremony was held at 10:30 AM and was formally opened by Dr. Y. Bharath Shetty, Hon’ble MLA, Mangaluru North. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Shetty remarked that such projects not only generate local job opportunities but also have the potential to transform the economic landscape of the region by promoting grassroots-level industrialisation.

A collaborative model for inclusive growth

Mr. Manjunath Bhandary, Hon’ble MLC and Chief Guest of the event, emphasised the significance of the project in supporting rural industries. “This initiative is not just about infrastructure. It is about restoring dignity to labour, enhancing local capacity, and enabling long-term development by bringing industrial activities closer to villages,” he said.

Presiding over the event, Mr. Abdul Jaleel, President of Adyar Gram Panchayat, said the launch of this unit was part of the Panchayat’s broader commitment to inclusive and community-driven growth. He also extended gratitude to Sahyadri College for its technical and academic support in bringing the vision to life.

Academic partnership fuelling innovation

The welcome address was delivered by Dr. S S Injaganeri, Principal of Sahyadri College, who shared insights into how academic institutions can effectively partner with local governance bodies to deliver impactful community initiatives. He noted that the power loom unit represents not only a tangible facility but also an opportunity for skill development, research, and socio-economic upliftment.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Vishal Samartha, who appreciated the coordinated efforts of the college faculty, panchayat leaders, and the local community. Prof. Padmanabha B. compered the event.

Building a self-reliant future

With the power loom unit now operational, it is expected to serve as a production hub while also offering skill training to local women and youth. This initiative aligns with national and state objectives of promoting self-employment, rural entrepreneurship, and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
