Private colleges under Mangalore University (MU) have voiced concerns over the lengthy approval process for introducing new skill-oriented courses. They have called on MU to streamline the process to avoid losing momentum and potential admissions. Despite these concerns, MU maintains that the process has been moved online and involves multiple criteria for approval.

“When PS Yadapadithaya, the former vice-chancellor of MU, took charge, he encouraged colleges, especially private ones, to develop innovative, skill-based courses. While some were approved and started, we’ve observed delays in the approval of other innovative courses,” a private college principal noted. This issue was highlighted during a recent academic council meeting in Mangalagangothri, Konaje.

Another principal expressed frustration, pointing out that similar courses are already being offered by nearby deemed-to-be universities. “Delayed permissions mean losing out on admissions as students opt for other institutions,” he said.

MU’s Vice-Chancellor, PL Dharma, explained that the delay might be due to the transition to an online approval process. Colleges need to upload the necessary documents and wait for processing. “However, there is no delay on the university’s end. All procedures were cleared the day after the academic council meeting. Some colleges are introducing courses in data analytics, artificial intelligence, and BVoc. There is no delay from our side,” he assured.

The call for a more efficient approval process reflects the colleges’ commitment to offering relevant, skill-based education and their need to remain competitive.
