In a significant step towards sustainable urban mobility, the first fully electric, air-conditioned, zero-emission private city bus was launched on Thursday, marking a new chapter in Mangaluru’s public transport sector.
The electric bus, introduced by Charge Mobility Private Limited — a collective of private bus operators — will begin operations on Route 27 from Mangaladevi Temple starting Friday.
Towards a carbon-free coastal city
Dilraj Alva, former president of the Dakshina Kannada District Bus Owners Association, said the initiative reflects the commitment of private operators to adapt to changing times and environmental needs.
“Private bus operators in the undivided Dakshina Kannada region have served the people for over 100 years. We have consistently adopted reforms, including introducing cashless travel and adhering to government fuel norms,” he said.
Alva added that Charge Mobility plans to introduce more electric buses in the coming days with the larger vision of making the coastal city carbon emission-free. He also noted that the company would participate in pan-India tenders to supply electric buses.
Made in India, built to global standards
Arathi K Parigi, Managing Director of Neuton Auto, a start-up registered under the Make in India initiative, described the vehicle as a proudly Indian product meeting global benchmarks.
The nine-metre electric bus has a seating capacity of 34 and is designed for city operations, including narrow streets, owing to its superior turning radius. The bus offers enhanced ride comfort and produces zero emissions.
Importantly, it features a kneel-down facility that lowers the front suspension, reducing the entry step height to assist senior citizens and passengers with mobility challenges in boarding and alighting safely.
The launch signals a progressive shift in Mangaluru’s transport landscape, blending innovation, environmental responsibility, and commuter comfort.
