Mangaluru: Well-known engineering academician Prof (Dr) Gopal Mugeraya has been appointed as the Ombudsperson of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, for a three-year term.

The appointment marks another significant responsibility for Prof Mugeraya, who has held several senior positions in India’s higher education and technical education sector. His extensive experience in engineering education, institutional leadership and academic administration has seen him serve in key positions at several premier institutions.

Three-year term at IIST

Prof Mugeraya will serve as Ombudsperson of IIST for a period of three years, according to sources.

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology is a specialised institution focused on education and research in space science, technology and related areas. The institute is located in Thiruvananthapuram and has close links with India’s space programme.

His appointment comes as his career continues to span academic leadership as well as technical and industrial advisory roles.

New technical advisory role in Japan

Prof Mugeraya was recently appointed as Special Technical Advisor to Takao Kogyo Engineering Company Limited in Japan, a globally reputed engineering design and industrial technology company.

The advisory position adds an international dimension to his professional responsibilities and reflects his experience in engineering and technical education.

His association with an international engineering company comes alongside his continued involvement in higher education administration in India.

Serving as Goa higher education council vice-chairman

Prof Mugeraya is currently serving as Vice-Chairman of the Goa State Higher Education Council.

The council plays an important role in matters concerning higher education policy, planning and development in Goa. His current role adds to his experience in shaping and overseeing higher education initiatives at the state level.

His career has included leadership positions at several National Institutes of Technology (NITs), giving him extensive experience in managing technical institutions and academic programmes.

Leadership roles at multiple NITs

Prof Mugeraya has previously served as Director of NIT Goa, NIT Agartala and NIT Mizoram.

His tenure at these institutions involved academic and administrative leadership, including institutional development and the strengthening of technical education.

He has also served as Dean at NITK Surathkal, one of the prominent engineering institutions in Karnataka. His association with NITK has further strengthened his connection with the coastal Karnataka academic community.

In addition, Prof Mugeraya served as Vice-President (Technical Education) at Nitte (Deemed to be University), where he was involved in academic and technical education-related responsibilities.

With leadership experience spanning NITs, universities, higher education councils and industry, Prof Mugeraya has established a long association with engineering education and institutional administration.

His appointment as Ombudsperson at IIST adds another important role to this career.
