Beltangady: Sub-inspector Vinod Reddy, who has been serving with the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in Beltangady in connection with the Burude case for the past year, has been suspended following allegations of corruption. The suspension was ordered on August 31 after an audio recording allegedly discussing police transfers and monthly collections went viral.
The action was taken following a preliminary inquiry conducted by Uttara Kannada district Superintendent of Police Deepan M N. Two other police personnel were also suspended in connection with the alleged corruption-related discussions.
Audio recording triggers inquiry
The matter came to light after an audio recording began circulating widely, allegedly containing conversations relating to police transfers and monthly collections.
Following the circulation of the recording, Uttara Kannada district police initiated a preliminary inquiry to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the conversation and the involvement of the personnel named in connection with it.
SP Deepan M N conducted the preliminary inquiry on August 31. Based on the findings and the allegations emerging from the audio recording, disciplinary action was initiated against three police personnel.
PSI Kiran Patil, PSI Krishna Arikere and PSI Vinod Reddy were suspended pending further proceedings.
The suspension indicates that the department has taken the allegations seriously and intends to examine whether the conversations reflected any actual misconduct or improper financial dealings.
Vinod Reddy was serving with Beltangady SIT
Vinod Reddy had previously served as a Sub-Inspector at Haliyal police station in Uttara Kannada district. He was subsequently transferred to Mundgod police station.
However, despite the transfer, Reddy continued to serve with the Special Investigation Team in Beltangady.
The SIT was constituted by the state government to investigate the Burude case. Reddy had reportedly been attached to the team from the time it was formed and had continued in the assignment for approximately one year.
His suspension has therefore drawn attention because of his continued involvement with the specialised investigation team despite his transfer from Haliyal to Mundgod.
Two other police personnel suspended
The preliminary inquiry was not limited to Reddy. Uttara Kannada police also suspended PSI Kiran Patil and PSI Krishna Arikere.
The three officers were suspended on August 31 following the inquiry into the allegations linked to the audio recording.
The recording allegedly contained discussions concerning transfers and monthly collections. However, the precise context of the conversations and whether the allegations amount to established corruption are subject to investigation and further departmental proceedings.
The police department is expected to examine the authenticity and circumstances of the recording along with other relevant information before determining further action.
Departmental action underway

Meanwhile, the SIT continues its work in connection with the Burude case in Beltangady. Reddy had been associated with the team since the state government constituted it and had continued to discharge duties with the SIT even after his transfer between police stations.
His suspension could now have implications for the team’s personnel arrangements, although the investigation into the underlying Burude case remains separate from the allegations leading to his suspension.
