Veteran legal expert B.D. Hiremath, who was instrumental in establishing a High Court bench in Hubballi-Dharwad, has now extended his support to the long-pending demand for a circuit bench in Mangaluru. Joining hands with advocates in the coastal districts, Hiremath participated in a key meeting organized by the Mangalore Bar Association and other civil groups on Monday.

The meeting concluded with a resolution to send delegations to the Governor, Chief Minister, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, and administrative judges, pressing for the immediate establishment of a High Court circuit bench in Mangaluru.

Hiremath emphasized that only mass public protests coupled with firm political commitment can yield results. He cited Section 51(3) of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, noting that the Chief Justice, in consultation with the Governor, holds the authority to set up circuit benches.

“This is not merely a lawyers’ issue—it’s the people’s rightful demand,” he asserted. “Justice should not be a privilege of the rich. Poor clients are being forced to travel across the state for legal recourse. Justice delivery must be local, swift, and affordable.”

MLC and advocate Ivan D’Souza announced that an action committee has been formed and will soon launch a major campaign. In the first phase, delegations will travel to Bengaluru within 15 days. Nearly one lakh students will send postcards backing the demand, and an office for the movement will soon open in Mangaluru.
