Advocate and MLC Ivan D’Souza, convener of the High Court Peeta Horata Samiti, met with key organizations in Mangaluru to rally support for establishing a High Court bench in the city. Formed by the Bar Association, the committee gathered representatives from the Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industries, SDM Law College, Builders Association, and Doctors Association to discuss the proposal.
“We had a productive meeting, and they agreed on the need for the bench,” Ivan told Deccan Chronicle. The committee aims to garner backing from all sectors of society and has already received support from the legal community. Meetings with the Chief Minister, Law Minister, and Dakshina Kannada Administrative Judge are scheduled in Bengaluru soon, followed by discussions with the Supreme Court Judge and Union Law Minister for central approval.
Ivan highlighted the availability of land for the bench, citing the district prison’s relocation, freeing up 9 acres in the heart of Mangaluru. The DC and SP offices could also be repurposed once shifted, providing ample space.
Emphasizing the region’s high litigation volume and Dakshina Kannada’s significant contributions to the legal field, Ivan proposed the bench would serve multiple districts, including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Shivamogga.
