Puttur: Heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed Puttur taluk on Wednesday evening, causing damage in several areas, including the collapse of a compound wall at the newly constructed court complex in Anemajalu near Bannur.

Rain continued for around one-and-a-half hours across parts of Puttur town and surrounding rural areas. What began as drizzle around 4 pm intensified into moderate to heavy showers, accompanied by thunder in several locations.

The collapse of the court complex compound wall onto an adjoining road raised concerns about construction quality, particularly as the facility was inaugurated only in January this year.

Compound wall collapses onto adjoining road

The compound wall of the newly constructed court complex at Anemajalu reportedly developed cracks before suddenly collapsing during the downpour.

Stones and debris from the fallen section spilled onto the adjoining road, prompting the use of a JCB to clear the obstruction and restore movement.

The wall extended towards the premises of a nearby anganwadi centre, adding to concerns about the potential risk to people in the vicinity.

The court complex was inaugurated in January 2026, and the compound wall was constructed through the Public Works Department (PWD).

Its collapse within a few months of the inauguration has raised questions about the quality and durability of the construction. However, the cause of the collapse has not been officially established.

Some residents reportedly recorded videos claiming that cracks had also appeared in portions of the compound wall that remained standing. The condition of the remaining structure and the reasons for the failure would need to be assessed by the concerned authorities.

Strong winds also caused damage to electrical infrastructure near Jainaraguri in Bannur, where a tree fell onto an electricity pole, bringing it down.

The incident disrupted power supply in Puttur town and several surrounding areas.

The combination of heavy rain, strong winds and falling trees affected normal activity in parts of the taluk. Residents faced inconvenience due to the power disruption as authorities dealt with the damage.

Fallen tree blocks Puttur-Uppinangady road

Another tree fell across the Puttur-Uppinangady road near Anemajalu Cross, obstructing traffic along the route.

Fire and emergency personnel reached the spot and cleared the fallen tree from the road, helping restore movement.

The incidents highlighted the disruption caused by the evening’s weather, with damage reported to the court complex compound wall, an electricity pole and a road affected by a fallen tree.

Rain continues in Puttur taluk

Puttur and surrounding areas have been experiencing rainfall over the past few days. Light rain was also reported in some locations on the night of October 6.

Wednesday’s heavier showers brought a fresh round of disruption, with the collapse of the court complex wall drawing particular attention because of the building’s recent inauguration.

The incident has renewed concerns over the condition of the newly constructed compound wall. An official assessment would be necessary to determine the cause of the collapse and whether corrective measures are required for the remaining structure.
