Mangaluru: Former minister and senior Congress leader Ramanath Rai has strongly defended the legacy of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, stating that her contributions, especially during the Emergency period, brought significant reforms that benefited the poor and marginalized. Speaking at a press conference held at the Dakshina Kannada Congress district office, Rai criticized opposition parties for using the Emergency to tarnish the image of a leader who, he said, sacrificed much for the nation.

Rai highlighted several major reforms introduced during the Emergency, including the nationalization of banks, land redistribution, and the provision of housing for economically weaker sections. “These initiatives led to rapid development and upliftment of rural and poor communities,” he said.

Addressing the criticism often directed at the Emergency era, he remarked, “If the Emergency truly harmed the people, the Congress wouldn’t have continued to win Lok Sabha elections in Dakshina Kannada. In fact, development gained momentum during that period.”

He also emphasized that the region owes a debt of gratitude to Indira Gandhi. “She prioritized the welfare of the poor. The so-called dark days brought light to millions who had been neglected for decades,” he asserted.

Reiterating that the opposition should not mock those who gave their lives for the country, Rai urged for a balanced view of history rather than a politically motivated narrative.
