Renowned teacher and entrepreneur Benjamin D’Souza from Kelarai, Mangaluru, passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at the age of 75, following a brief illness.

Benjamin’s educational journey began at St. Joachim School in Kelarai, followed by studies at St. Aloysius College, Mangalore. He earned a Master’s degree in Political Science from Venkateswara University, Thirupathi, and a B.Ed. from Government College, Mangalore. His teaching career started at Rosario Institutions, Mangalore, and spanned various schools in Puttur and Milagres, Udupi.

Beyond teaching, Benjamin embarked on an entrepreneurial journey, serving as the secretary of the Bus Owners Association and chairman of the Lions Club, Dakshina Kannada district. He was a member of the Land Tribunal and Bajpe Mandal Panchayath.

His dedication to community service was evident through his three-term membership in the diocesan pastoral council and vice-presidency in the parish council. A talented singer and sports enthusiast, Benjamin actively encouraged youth participation in cultural and sports events. He was also a toastmaster and emceed numerous events around Mangalore. Notably, he was the first-ever life member of the Catholic Sabha of Mangalore Pradesh.

Benjamin leaves behind his wife Violet D’Souza (Retd Associate Professor, Govinda Das College, Surathkal), daughter Nirmala D’Souza (Senior Manager, HDFC Bank), sons Benjohn D’Souza (Chief Engineer, currently in Mexico) and Benoy D’Souza, son-in-law Roshan Castelino (former Manager, State Bank of India, Shivbagh), and grandchild Rachel Pia.

His legacy of education, entrepreneurship, and community service will be fondly remembered.
