Mangaluru: The 77th Republic Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour and grandeur across Dakshina Kannada districts on Monday, with ministers and officials calling for peace, social harmony and responsible citizenship while highlighting key developmental initiatives of the state government.
The district-level Republic Day celebrations were held at Nehru Maidan, where Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao unfurled the national flag and addressed the gathering. In his speech, the minister warned that the government would not tolerate any individual or organisation attempting to mislead local youth for personal gain or incite them into violent activities. He said such actions would be dealt with firmly to safeguard peace and public order.
Call for peace and social harmony
Dinesh Gundu Rao said peace and harmony could be sustained only when people practised the true essence of their respective religions while showing respect towards other faiths. He underlined that mutual respect and coexistence were essential pillars of a progressive society.
The minister stressed that maintaining law and order was critical for sustained development. He urged citizens to cooperate with the administration and law enforcement agencies to ensure a peaceful environment conducive to growth. Divisive forces that attempt to fragment society, he said, continue to pose a major challenge to development and social cohesion.
Focus on development initiatives
Highlighting ongoing and proposed development works, the minister said the modernisation of the fishing harbour was being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 37 crore. The project includes the construction of a new 320-metre-long jetty, development of modern infrastructure, reconstruction of auction halls and installation of improved drainage facilities.
He said the project would address a long-pending demand of the fishing community and significantly enhance safety, efficiency and livelihoods associated with harbour operations. The government, he added, remained committed to inclusive development across sectors.
