Udupi: Tragedy on busy coastal highway

A fatal road accident was reported in Ucchila, Udupi district, on Tuesday morning when a motorcyclist was killed instantly after being hit by an unidentified vehicle on National Highway 66 (NH-66). The accident once again highlighted the risks faced by riders on the busy coastal stretch connecting Udupi and Mangaluru.

The Padubidri Police arrived at the scene, inspected the site, and have launched an investigation to trace the unidentified vehicle involved.

Investigation under way

Police officials stated that the matter is being treated with priority, as hit-and-run cases on NH-66 have become frequent. Officers are likely to examine CCTV footage from the surrounding areas and seek eyewitness accounts to identify the vehicle.

Authorities are also checking whether the accident occurred due to rash driving, over-speeding, or negligence by the unidentified driver.

Concerns over road safety

Residents of Udupi and surrounding areas have raised concerns over increasing accidents on NH-66, one of the busiest highways in coastal Karnataka. The highway witnesses heavy movement of private buses, trucks, and passenger vehicles every day. Poor driving discipline, high speeds, and inadequate enforcement have contributed to a rising number of collisions, many of them fatal.

Community members stressed the need for better traffic monitoring, installation of cameras, and stricter enforcement to curb reckless driving and reduce casualties.

Conclusion

The tragic accident in Ucchila has claimed yet another life on NH-66, underlining the dangers of road travel along the stretch. As investigations continue, police are hopeful of tracking down the vehicle responsible. The incident has also revived the debate on improving safety measures and accountability to prevent such avoidable deaths.
