Beltangady: The Beltangady police have arrested right-wing activist Puneeth Kerehalli in Bengaluru in connection with a case involving alleged hate speech circulated on social media. He is currently being brought to Beltangady for further investigation, police sources confirmed.
The arrest comes after Kerehalli repeatedly failed to appear before authorities despite multiple notices issued during the course of the investigation.
Complaint and allegations
The case was registered based on a complaint filed on August 7, 2025, by Joram Barboza, a resident of Hunsekatte in Kasba village of Beltangady. In his complaint, Barboza alleged that Kerehalli had delivered a provocative speech aimed at inciting communal disharmony and later circulated the video on social media platforms.
Police officials stated that the content of the speech and its circulation were being examined as part of the investigation to determine its potential impact on public order.
Arrest after non-compliance
Following the registration of the case, the Beltangady police had issued several notices directing Kerehalli to appear for questioning. However, due to his continued non-compliance, authorities approached the court and secured an arrest warrant.
A special police team was subsequently dispatched to Bengaluru, where Kerehalli was located and taken into custody. Officials said the operation was carried out in accordance with legal procedures after obtaining the necessary warrant from the Beltangady court.
Legal process underway
After his arrest, Kerehalli underwent preliminary interrogation. Police officials indicated that he will be produced before a local court in Beltangady, where further legal proceedings will follow.
Authorities have not disclosed additional details regarding the charges at this stage, but emphasised that the investigation is ongoing.
Focus on maintaining communal harmony
Police reiterated that strict action would be taken against any attempts to disturb communal harmony through inflammatory speeches or social media content. The case highlights increasing scrutiny of online content and its potential to influence public sentiment.
