Mangaluru/Udupi: Coastal Karnataka, particularly Mangaluru and Udupi districts, is witnessing a steady rise in temperatures over the past week, accompanied by unusual wind patterns that have disrupted pre-monsoon rainfall. The changing weather dynamics have led to hot and humid conditions, with authorities preparing for possible heat-related health concerns.

Unusual wind direction disrupts rainfall

Weather observers note that strong winds have been blowing consistently during mornings and nights, dispersing rain-bearing clouds and preventing precipitation. Typically, during the pre-monsoon season, winds flow from the Bay of Bengal towards the Arabian Sea, aiding cloud formation over the coastal belt.

However, in a notable deviation, recent winds have been blowing in the reverse direction—from the Arabian Sea towards the Bay of Bengal. This shift has caused clouds forming over coastal Karnataka to drift away towards Tamil Nadu, where they have resulted in rainfall instead.

The absence of cloud cover over Dakshina Kannada and Udupi has contributed to dry conditions despite the presence of evening cloud formations that suggest possible showers.

Temperatures cross 38°C

The altered weather pattern has led to fluctuating yet consistently high temperatures across the region. Afternoon temperatures have crossed 38°C in several areas, with heat intensifying from early morning hours.

Residents have reported discomfort due to the combined effect of heat and humidity, particularly during midday. Even though clouds gather during evenings, the lack of rainfall has prolonged the dry spell.

Pre-monsoon rainfall below expectations

According to available data from March 1 to date, Dakshina Kannada district has received 34.7 mm of rainfall, while Udupi has recorded 32.1 mm. Overall, the coastal region has received around 26.1 mm of rainfall so far.

These figures indicate relatively low pre-monsoon rainfall, raising concerns about water availability and agricultural impact if the trend continues.

Health preparedness amid heat concerns

With the possibility of temperatures rising further, authorities are taking precautionary measures to address potential heatwave conditions.

At Wenlock Hospital, a dedicated five-bed ward has been set up to treat heat-related illnesses. In addition, taluk hospitals in Beltangady, Sullia, Puttur, and Bantwal have prepared two-bed treatment units equipped with essential medicines, air conditioning, and emergency care facilities.

Health officials have advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, and take necessary precautions, especially for children and the elderly.

IMD forecasts continued heat

The India Meteorological Department has forecast that hot and humid conditions are likely to persist along the coastal region from April 9 to 11. While there is a possibility of rainfall returning within the next week, no immediate relief is expected.

Conclusion

The current spell of rising temperatures and disrupted rainfall highlights the impact of shifting wind patterns on coastal weather systems. As residents cope with heat and humidity, authorities remain on alert, balancing preparedness for both heatwave conditions and the anticipated return of pre-monsoon showers in the coming days.
