New Delhi: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, inaugurated eight significant infrastructure projects at the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) as part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations. The event, held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing port facilities and promoting maritime trade.
Key Infrastructure Projects Launched:
- PQC Roads at MDL Yard: Construction of 675 meters of Plain Cement Concrete (PQC) roads equipped with modern drainage systems to facilitate smoother cargo movement.
- Truck Parking Terminal at Baikampady: Development of a 20,000 sq. m. truck parking terminal with capacity for 180–200 trucks, aimed at reducing congestion and improving logistics efficiency.
- Upgradation of KK Gate: Modernization of the KK Gate with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)-enabled systems for seamless cargo handling, integrated with Customs and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) facilities.
- Expansion of Customs House Truck Terminal: Increase in capacity to accommodate 50–80 trucks per day, enhancing the efficiency of customs clearance processes.
- Covered Storage Sheds: Construction of storage sheds to protect cargo from environmental factors, ensuring the safety and quality of goods.
- Dedicated Cruise Terminal Gate: Establishment of a separate gate for cruise terminal operations to streamline passenger and cargo handling.
- Modernized Entry Gates: Implementation of advanced technology at entry points to facilitate faster and secure access for vehicles and personnel.
- 150-Bed Multi-Specialty Hospital: Inauguration of a state-of-the-art hospital, the first among India’s major ports, to provide comprehensive healthcare services to port employees and the surrounding community.

Minister Sonowal emphasized the strategic importance of the maritime sector in India’s economic growth and its role in the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. He highlighted that the NMPA’s Golden Jubilee is a testament to its contributions to the nation’s maritime trade and regional development.
Future Plans:
Looking ahead, the government plans to invest approximately ₹80 lakh crore in the maritime sector by 2047, aiming to bolster port infrastructure, enhance logistics capabilities, and promote sustainable maritime practices.
