Mangaluru: Large shoals of sardines, locally known as boothai, washed ashore at Ullal beach on Friday, offering local residents an unexpected and plentiful catch. The rare occurrence drew several people to the shoreline, where they gathered the fish despite strong waves crashing onto the beach.
Rare sight attracts local residents
Residents said the unusual event took place at around 11 am when large numbers of sardines suddenly appeared along the shoreline. The sight quickly attracted nearby residents, many of whom rushed to the beach carrying buckets, baskets and bags to collect the fish.
Despite rough sea conditions and strong waves, people managed to gather significant quantities of sardines that had washed ashore.
Fishing boat believed to have altered shoals’ direction
According to locals, the sardine shoals are believed to have changed direction after being disturbed by the sound of a passing fishing boat. The sudden movement is thought to have forced the fish towards the shore, where they eventually became stranded on the beach.
While the exact reason behind the phenomenon is not officially confirmed, residents familiar with local fishing conditions said such incidents have occasionally occurred in the past when large schools of fish abruptly change their course.
Residents make the most of the unexpected catch
The unexpected bounty turned into a welcome opportunity for many local families. Several residents collected enough fish for household consumption, while others sold part of the catch in nearby areas.
People were seen gathering the sardines in containers and transporting them home soon after the fish washed ashore. The abundance of fresh fish delighted many, especially those who happened to be near the beach when the incident occurred.
Such incidents are uncommon
Locals said large shoals of fish washing ashore are relatively rare and are witnessed only occasionally along the coast. Similar incidents have been reported in the past under unusual marine conditions or when fish schools are disturbed while moving close to the shoreline.
Residents recalled that a comparable incident occurred at Malpe beach a few months ago, where large numbers of fish had similarly washed ashore and were collected by people living nearby.
Marine experts have often attributed such events to a combination of environmental conditions, changing sea currents, predator movements or sudden disturbances that alter the movement of fish schools.
