Mangaluru: Asian Games gold medallist and SDM College of Business Management alumna M. R. Poovamma returned to her college in Mangaluru, where she was felicitated for her role in India’s gold-medal win in the women’s 4x400m relay at the 2026 Asian Games. Poovamma was part of the Indian quartet, alongside Kiran Pahal, Prachi Choudhary and Vithya Ramraj, that won the women’s 4x400m relay at the Asian Games in Japan.

The felicitation recognised Poovamma’s contribution to Indian athletics and her association with SDM College of Business Management, where she studied before beginning her international sporting career. Recalling her time at the college, Poovamma said the institution played an important role during her formative years. She particularly remembered the support extended by the then Principal, Mr. Devaraj, and the city-wide procession organised in her honour in 2008.

Speaking on the occasion, Mrs. Poovamma said, “I am extremely happy and proud to have been a student of this institution. The year 2008 remains one of the most memorable milestones in my career, and I am deeply grateful to the then Principal, Mr. Devaraj, for his immense support and encouragement. The procession organised for me across the city was truly special. Returning to my college today is an emotional and unforgettable experience. I strongly believe that with dedication, determination and the right mindset, we can achieve wonders. Our women’s team has demonstrated this by bringing a medal to our country. I hope my journey encourages young people to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams with commitment.”

Dr. S. Satheeshchandra, Secretary, SDME Society, said, “Celebrating the achievements of our students and alumni has always been an important tradition of our institution. This is indeed one of the most memorable occasions in recent times. We believe in recognising achievers and introducing their journeys to our students so that they can learn from their experiences. Representing India on the international sporting stage for nearly 24 years is no ordinary achievement; it is a remarkable record. We are delighted to welcome Poovamma back and recognise her as one of our distinguished alumni. Her journey is a source of inspiration for the entire SDM family.”

Sri Shreyes Kumar D, Director, SDME Society, said, “Mrs. M. R. Poovamma is a shining example of discipline, dedication and sporting excellence. As a proud alumna of SDM College of Business Management, her outstanding achievements in athletics are a matter of immense pride for the entire SDM family. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and commitment. We are delighted to welcome her back to her alma mater and recognise her accomplishments. I am confident that her experiences will encourage generations of young achievers to pursue their aspirations with confidence and determination. We wish her continued success and many more laurels in the years ahead.”

The felicitation reflected SDM College of Business Management’s commitment to bringing accomplished alumni back to campus and giving students the opportunity to learn from real journeys of excellence. Poovamma’s return served as a powerful reminder that sporting success is built on sustained hard work, self-belief and the support of mentors and institutions along the way.
