Moodbidri: Police in Moodbidri have busted an illegal cockfighting den and arrested six persons during a late-night raid under the Mangaluru City Commissionerate limits.
The operation was carried out by Moodbidri police following a tip-off about unlawful activities taking place in the Hoyipaalabettu area of Moodumarnadu village on March 18.
Raid conducted after tip-off
According to police sources, officers received credible information that a group of individuals had gathered after a local fair to conduct cockfights. Acting swiftly, a team conducted a raid at the location and caught the accused in the act.
Investigations revealed that the accused had organised cockfights by tying sharp blades to the legs of roosters, forcing them into violent combat. The activity was allegedly being conducted as part of illegal gambling, with money being wagered on the outcomes of the fights.
Six accused arrested on the spot
During the raid, police arrested six individuals at the scene. Authorities stated that the accused were directly involved in organising and participating in the cockfighting event.
The police also seized:
- 17 live roosters used for cockfighting
- Two sharp blades attached to the birds
- Cash amounting to ₹1,480
The rescued roosters have been taken into custody and are expected to be handed over to appropriate animal care authorities.
Case registered under BNS and animal cruelty law
A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Police officials said that strict action will be taken against those involved in such illegal and inhumane activities.
Police warn against illegal activities
Authorities have reiterated that cockfighting is not only illegal but also a serious act of cruelty towards animals. They have warned that anyone found organising or participating in such activities will face legal consequences.
Police also appealed to the public to report similar unlawful practices, assuring prompt action against offenders.
