Mangaluru: The Palakkad Division of Southern Railway has expressed serious concern over the rising number of accidents at railway level crossing (LC) gates caused by negligence and safety violations by road users. Railway authorities have warned that such incidents not only endanger lives but also disrupt train operations and cause damage to railway infrastructure.
According to data released by the division, a total of 79 level crossing gate accidents were reported during 2025 and 2026. Of these, 55 incidents occurred in 2025, while 24 accidents were recorded in 2026 so far.
Majority of accidents caused by rule violations
Railway officials said most of the accidents occurred when motorists attempted to cross railway tracks despite warning signals, approaching trains or closed gates. Such actions place both road users and railway passengers at risk and can potentially lead to fatal accidents.
The division noted that level crossing gates are critical safety installations designed to prevent collisions between trains and vehicles. Ignoring warning signs and attempting to bypass closed gates significantly increases the likelihood of serious accidents.
Officials stressed that adherence to safety regulations is essential to ensure the smooth movement of trains and the protection of public lives.
Driving licences suspended
As part of enforcement measures, the driving licences of six drivers involved in level crossing gate accidents have been suspended for a period of three months by the competent authorities.
Railway authorities stated that action has been initiated in several other cases as well, with proceedings currently at different stages. The division has been actively coordinating with licensing authorities to ensure strict action against drivers responsible for gate-hit incidents.
Officials said licence suspension serves as a deterrent and reinforces the importance of following railway crossing safety norms.
₹17.3 lakh recovered from offenders
During the 2025–26 financial year, Southern Railway successfully recovered ₹17.3 lakh from offenders who damaged railway property by driving vehicles into level crossing gates.
The recovered amount represents compensation for damage caused to railway infrastructure during various incidents across the division.
Railway authorities stated that criminal proceedings were initiated in all cases involving damage to level crossing gates and related railway assets. Offenders were held accountable both financially and legally for their actions.
Railway warns of serious consequences
The Palakkad Division reiterated that violations at level crossing gates can have severe consequences, including loss of life, disruption of railway services and significant property damage.
Officials pointed out that even a single accident at a level crossing can affect train schedules, inconvenience thousands of passengers and lead to costly repairs.
The division urged motorists, pedestrians and all road users to exercise caution while approaching railway crossings and to follow the instructions displayed at such locations.
Public urged to follow safety measures
Southern Railway has advised road users to strictly obey gate signals, warning boards and instructions issued by gatekeepers. Authorities emphasised that crossing railway tracks when gates are closed or ignoring warning indications is a punishable offence.
The railway administration warned that violators could face criminal prosecution, recovery of damages and suspension of driving licences in addition to other legal consequences.
Officials also encouraged the public to remain patient at level crossings and wait until gates are fully opened before proceeding across the tracks.
Conclusion
With 79 level crossing accidents reported in the past two years, Southern Railway has called for greater public awareness and strict adherence to safety regulations. Railway authorities believe that responsible behaviour by road users can significantly reduce accidents, protect lives and ensure the uninterrupted operation of train services across the region.
