Sudden torrential rain and fierce winds on Monday evening caused significant destruction across Karnataka’s coastal belt, with Udupi and Dakshina Kannada (DK) districts bearing the brunt. Udupi alone reported damages nearing ₹69 lakh, while losses in DK crossed ₹1.5 crore, primarily due to widespread damage to electricity infrastructure and houses.

In Udupi district, two homes were completely destroyed and 26 were partially damaged, totalling losses of ₹15.76 lakh. MESCOM (Mangalore Electricity Supply Company) reported infrastructure damage worth ₹53 lakh, and crop loss valued at ₹15,000. The highest rainfall was seen in Karkala (14.3 mm), followed by Hebri (12.8 mm).

House damages included:

  • Udupi taluk: 2 houses totally destroyed, 9 partially damaged

  • Kundapur: 6 houses partially damaged

  • Kaup: 5 houses damaged, one with a ₹1 lakh loss

  • Brahmavar, Byndoor, and Karkala also reported scattered damage

  • Additionally, 326 electric poles were uprooted, and 4.26 km of power lines severed, forcing MESCOM to begin large-scale repairs.

In Dakshina Kannada, the situation was equally grim. Storms uprooted hundreds of arecanut trees and damaged 266 electric poles and one transformer. Sullia, Moodbidri, and Beltangady were among the worst-hit areas. Since early April, DK has witnessed the destruction of 1,035 poles and 12 transformers, pushing MESCOM’s total losses beyond ₹1.5 crore.

The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for April 16–17, warning of intensified pre-monsoon showers and thunderstorms in both districts.
