Deep sorrow filled the city as hundreds gathered at Fr. Muller Hospital mortuary to pay their final respects to Fr Melwin J. Pinto SJ, whose passing has left the St Aloysius community heartbroken.

The late priest, remembered for his humility, compassion, and fatherly care, served as Rector of St. Aloysius Institutions, Pro-Chancellor of St. Aloysius University, and Vice-President of the Mangalore Jesuit Educational Society.

Heartbreaking scenes of grief

Among those who came to bid farewell were many students whose lives had been touched by Fr Melwin’s kindness. Particularly emotional scenes unfolded when four hostel students from the North East were overcome with grief and reportedly collapsed while mourning.

They had to be supported and carried out by others as they wept uncontrollably, reflecting the deep emotional bond students shared with the beloved priest. Witnesses described the scene as one of a family mourning the loss of a father figure.

A priest loved beyond titles

Though he held senior leadership positions, Fr Melwin was widely known for his simple nature and accessibility. Students, parents, faculty members, and alumni often recalled his warm smile, gentle words, and readiness to help anyone in distress.

For many students living away from home, he became a source of comfort and guidance.
