Sullia: Sullia police have registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against a man following a complaint involving a minor girl. The case was registered after the matter came to the attention of the school authorities, who informed the police.
According to the police, the complaint was filed by the headmaster of the school where the girl is studying after she remained absent from classes. During an inquiry into her absence, information regarding the alleged incident was brought to the notice of the school administration, following which the matter was reported to the police.
Police have identified the accused as Manjunath, a neighbour known to the girl. An investigation has been launched, and officials said further action will be taken in accordance with the law.
Complaint lodged by school headmaster
Police said the case came to light after the school headmaster enquired about the student’s prolonged absence from classes.
During the inquiry, information regarding the alleged incident was disclosed, prompting the school authorities to immediately approach the police. Based on the complaint submitted by the headmaster, Sullia police registered a case and initiated an investigation.
Officials said the prompt reporting of the matter enabled the police to begin legal proceedings without delay.
Case registered under BNS and POCSO Act
Based on the complaint, Sullia police registered Crime No. 94/2026 under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Police said the provisions invoked relate to offences involving a minor and are intended to ensure a thorough investigation while safeguarding the rights and privacy of the child.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the survivor or the circumstances of the case in keeping with legal provisions that protect the identity of minors.
Investigation in progress
Police officials said the investigation is underway and evidence is being collected as part of the inquiry.
Statements from persons connected with the case are being recorded, and investigators are following the procedures prescribed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act.
Officials reiterated that the identity of the minor will remain confidential, as mandated by law.

Police have urged educational institutions, parents and members of the public to promptly report any concerns involving the safety and welfare of children so that appropriate legal action can be initiated without delay.
