B C Road has seen a major infrastructural milestone with the opening of the newly completed third bridge over the Netravati River on Saturday, November 16. This bridge, a key component of the Rs 14 crore four-lane development project connecting B C Road and Addahole, was put to the test with a trial run on Friday before regular traffic commenced smoothly the following day.

The 386-meter-long bridge, built by K N R Constructions, will significantly ease traffic congestion on B C Road. It stands 13.5 meters wide and 16 meters above the river, supported by eleven pillars. The new structure, designed for vehicles heading towards B C Road, ensures safer, smoother traffic flow by preventing head-on collisions, as the older bridges will now accommodate traffic going in the opposite direction.

B C Road’s Historic Bridge Legacy

This development adds to B C Road’s unique legacy of having three bridges over the Netravati River, a rare feat for a single town. The first bridge, constructed during British rule in 1916, was known for its narrow design, causing frequent traffic jams. A second, wider bridge was built in 2002-03 to manage growing traffic, and now, the third bridge marks a modern leap in improving connectivity.

Ongoing Road Work and Caution

While the third bridge is operational, nearby roadworks continue, and drivers are advised to exercise caution, particularly near Sagar Hall where the road narrows. Authorities also urge adherence to speed limits, especially in areas where construction is ongoing, such as the stretch leading to the old bridge, which has been modified for safety.

Flyover and Ongoing Construction

In addition, the Melkar-Panemangalore flyover has been opened to ease traffic flow, with the full stretch of the Melkar flyover expected to be open by the end of the month. Work is still underway to widen the road between Melkar and Kalladka, so drivers should remain cautious.

Maintenance of Older Bridges

Concerns remain regarding the deteriorating condition of the older bridges. The surface of the older bridge near the new one has worn down, and authorities are urged to prioritize repairs to maintain safe traffic movement.
