On August 2, a protest was held in Thokottu, urging the construction of a pedestrian overpass or underpass at the historic Olapete railway crossing. Ullal municipal council member, Dinkar Ullal, stressed the need for unified efforts to bring this issue to the attention of MPs and expedite its resolution.
During the protest organized by the Ullal Students’ Union under the Thokottu flyover, Ullal criticized the central government for delaying educational loans for students and emphasized the urgent need for a pedestrian overpass at the Olapete railway tracks for public safety. He highlighted his 40-year struggle to address this issue, noting that crossing the tracks is illegal and dangerous, particularly with two tracks now in place. Previous discussions with then-central railway minister Oscar Fernandes failed due to municipal negligence. Ullal called on the community to pressure Dakshina Kannada MP Brijesh Chowta and current railway minister V Somanna for swift action.
The railway crossing is vital for accessing schools, colleges, mosques, temples, and churches in Olapete. Despite iron fences installed by railway authorities, people, including differently-abled individuals, continue to risk crossing, resulting in injuries. Ullal warned that students would escalate their protest if an overpass is not built soon.
Student leader Reeshal D’Souza stressed the urgency of the construction to prevent further injuries and fatalities. The protest, led by Ullal Students’ Union president Safwan Kerebail, garnered significant community support. Key figures present included Fr Cyprian Pinto, Alwyn D’Souza, and Ullal municipal council members Basil D’Souza and Veena Shanti D’Souza. Demetrius D’Souza compered the event, with Cyril Robert D’Souza giving the vote of thanks.
The protest concluded with a firm demand for immediate action to ensure the safety of Thokottu residents and students.
