Kokkada: A tragic incident unfolded in Soutadka Gundi near Kokkada as two wild elephants were spotted roaming a cashew plantation, ultimately leading to the death of a local resident.
The victim, identified as Balakrishna Shetty, a native of Soutadka, was fatally attacked by one of the elephants while walking through the plantation. According to eyewitnesses, Forest Department officials had arrived on-site to drive the elephants back into the forest after locals reported their presence near human habitation.
As the officials attempted to chase the animals away, one of the elephants suddenly turned aggressive. It charged at Balakrishna, striking him forcefully with its trunk, causing severe injuries. Despite the presence of others, the attack was swift, and Balakrishna died on the spot.
The presence of wild elephants near human settlements has raised serious concerns about the increasing frequency of man-animal conflict in the region. Local residents have appealed to the Forest Department to take strong preventive measures, including fencing and early alert systems, to ensure such tragedies do not repeat.
Forest officials are now tracking the elephants to safely guide them back to the forest and prevent further danger to nearby residents. Authorities have also initiated an investigation and are coordinating with the victim’s family for necessary support and compensation.
This incident highlights the urgent need for improved wildlife management strategies in sensitive border areas between forest and farmland.
