An unfortunate incident occurred at a Mangaluru sub jail on Sunday, where an undertrial inmate passed away. The incident took place between 4:05 am and 4:55 am. Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal confirmed that the individual, Prakash Gopal Moolya (43), was a resident of Hudco Colony near Mahaveer College Marigudi Temple in Moodbidri.

Moolya had been arrested on March 11 and was in judicial custody in connection with a case under the POCSO Act at the Moodbidri Police Station.

According to initial reports, Moolya was found in his cell in Barrack ‘B’, Cell No 2, in the jail’s toilet area, where he had tied a towel to the window grill. The jail staff quickly responded and rushed him to Government Wenlock Hospital, where he was unfortunately declared deceased by the attending doctors.

A case has been registered at Barke Police Station under Section 194(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023. Authorities are following the necessary legal procedures, as confirmed by the Commissioner of Police.
