Mangaluru: The Mangaluru City Crime Branch (CCB) police arrested two youths accused of attacking a police constable who was on night beat duty within the limits of Urwa Police Station in the early hours of May 24. The accused were traced and detained in Kerala following a detailed investigation carried out by the police team.

According to Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH, the incident took place at around 2.10 am near Narayanaguru Community Hall Road at Kodikal. The constable was conducting routine night patrol duty when two youths arrived on a red electric scooter. During the interaction, the pillion rider allegedly assaulted the constable using a piece of cement sheet, causing injuries to the policeman’s head.

Police immediately registered a case at Urwa Police Station under Sections 121(1), 109, 132 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The sections relate to assault on a public servant, obstruction of duty and attempt to murder.

Investigation leads police to Kerala

Following the attack, the police launched a detailed investigation and collected evidence from the spot and nearby areas. Officials said technical evidence and credible information helped investigators identify the suspects involved in the assault.

A special team from the CCB tracked the accused to the Kanhangad region in Kerala. The team detained both individuals and later handed them over to the Urwa Police Station for further legal proceedings and investigation.

The arrested have been identified as Sachin K R (24), a resident of Arasinamakki in Kokkada village of Belthangady taluk, and Chandan (24), a resident of Nelyadi in Puttur taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

Police said both accused were residing in a rented accommodation at Phalguni Nagara in Ashoknagar area of the city. Sachin was employed as a driver at a factory in Kuntikana, while Chandan was working as a technician at a showroom in Kuloor.

Attack allegedly triggered after questioning

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused were roaming around the city late at night on the electric scooter when they were stopped by the beat police for questioning. During the interaction, an argument allegedly broke out between the constable and the two youths.

Investigators said the pillion rider then picked up a broken piece of cement sheet lying nearby and attacked the constable. The injured policeman sustained head injuries in the incident and was provided medical treatment.

Police officials stated that attacks on police personnel while on duty are treated seriously as they directly obstruct law enforcement activities and pose a threat to public safety. The department has initiated strict legal action against the accused under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Commissioner praises investigation team

Commissioner of Police Sudheer Kumar Reddy CH appreciated the efforts of the investigation team for quickly tracing the accused despite them fleeing to another state after the incident. He said coordinated efforts by the City Crime Branch and Urwa Police Station personnel helped solve the case within a short period.

Officials added that the investigation is still in progress to determine whether the accused were involved in any other criminal activities in the city. Police are also examining additional evidence related to the attack.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by police personnel during night patrol duties and routine law enforcement operations. Authorities have assured that strict action will continue against individuals attempting to obstruct police work or attack officers on duty.
