Mangaluru: The Kavoor police have arrested two persons for allegedly creating and circulating a video on social media in which one of them is seen dancing with a sword, an act that police said caused fear and alarm among the public. The arrests were made following the circulation of the video on Facebook, which authorities said had the potential to intimidate viewers and disturb public order.
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H said the incident came to light on December 13, when a video clip was widely shared on social media platforms. The video showed a young man dancing to a song while brandishing a sword, accompanied by a caption that police described as provocative in nature.
Video uploaded on Facebook account
According to the police, the video was shared as a story on a Facebook account named “Suresh Psy”. The account is allegedly operated by Suresh (29), a resident of Urundadigudde in Kavoor, Mangaluru.
The video featured Ameer Suhail (28), a resident of Bunder, Mangaluru, dancing while holding a sword. It was uploaded with the caption “VIBES” along with a white heart emoji. Police said the casual presentation of a weapon in the video raised serious concerns about public safety.
Content caused fear among public, say police
Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy C H stated that the content was widely circulated on social media and had the potential to create fear and insecurity among members of the public. Police noted that the open display of a sword in a public-facing video, combined with its viral reach, could encourage unlawful behaviour or cause panic.
Based on a preliminary assessment of the video and its impact, the Kavoor police took suo motu cognisance of the matter and initiated legal action against those involved in creating and sharing the content.
Case registered under BNS, Arms Act and IT Act
Following the identification of the individuals involved, the Kavoor police registered a case under Section 352(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. In addition, Sections 4 and 25(1)(a) of the Indian Arms Act were invoked for the alleged illegal possession and display of a weapon.
Police also booked the accused under Section 66 of the Information Technology Act for the misuse of digital platforms to circulate content that could threaten public safety and order.
Sword and mobile phones seized
As part of the investigation, police arrested both Suresh and Ameer Suhail. The sword used in the video was seized, along with the mobile phones that were allegedly used to record and upload the video on social media.
Officials said the seized devices will be subjected to further technical examination to determine whether similar content had been created or shared earlier.
Arrest carried out by Kavoor police team
The arrests were carried out by a team led by Kavoor Police Inspector Raghavendra M Baindoor. The operation was conducted under the guidance of Mangaluru North Sub-Division Assistant Commissioner of Police Shrikanth K.
Police Sub-Inspector Mallikarjuna Biradar and other staff members of the Kavoor Police Station were also part of the team that traced the accused and carried out the arrests.
Police warn against misuse of social media
Police officials reiterated that displaying weapons on social media platforms, even for entertainment or personal expression, can have serious legal consequences. They warned that such acts may be treated as threats to public order, especially when shared widely online.
Authorities urged social media users to act responsibly and refrain from posting content that could instil fear or promote unlawful behaviour.
Conclusion
The arrests underline the Mangaluru police’s strict approach towards content on social media that poses a threat to public safety. Officials have stated that legal action will continue against individuals who misuse digital platforms to circulate intimidating or unlawful content, in order to maintain peace and public confidence.
