Mangaluru: The Puttur Town Police have registered two separate cases following an incident in which a man allegedly brandished a sword in public near Mukve Masjid and was later assaulted by local residents in Dakshina Kannada district.
Police said the incident involved an earlier dispute between two individuals and later escalated into a public disturbance and assault. Investigations are currently underway in both cases registered by the police.
Argument near Mukve Masjid leads to confrontation
According to police, the first complaint was filed by Mohammed Sirajuddin (36), a resident of Narimogaru in Puttur.
In his complaint, Sirajuddin stated that he was near Mukve Masjid when Abdul Rahiman, who is also from Narimogaru, approached him and allegedly picked a quarrel over an issue that had occurred earlier the same evening.
Following the argument, Abdul Rahiman reportedly left the location. Sirajuddin told police that he later started returning home after the incident.
However, when he reached the Mukve area again, he allegedly saw Abdul Rahiman holding a sword and displaying it in public.
Accused allegedly displayed sword in public
According to the complaint, Abdul Rahiman was allegedly brandishing the weapon in a manner that caused fear among people present in the area.
Police said the act was perceived as a threat and created panic among the public. The complainant alleged that Rahiman appeared to be displaying the sword with the intention of harming someone.
Based on the complaint, Puttur Town Police registered a case against Abdul Rahiman.
The case has been booked under Sections 109 and 351 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023, along with Sections 3, 25 and 27 of the Arms Act, 1959.
Police officials confirmed that an investigation into the incident was initiated immediately after the complaint was received.
Local residents reportedly assault accused
Police said that after the alleged sword brandishing, several local residents who were present at the spot reportedly assaulted Abdul Rahiman.
During the assault, Rahiman sustained serious injuries. He was later shifted to Wenlock District Hospital in Mangaluru for treatment.
Hospital sources said he is currently undergoing treatment as an inpatient and is reported to be out of danger.
Authorities are also examining the circumstances that led to the assault and the role of those involved in the attack.
Counter-complaint filed by Abdul Rahiman
Meanwhile, Abdul Rahiman has filed a counter-complaint regarding the incident.
In his statement to the police, Rahiman alleged that he was standing near Mukve Junction when unidentified individuals attacked him from behind.
He claimed that the attackers assaulted him repeatedly until he lost consciousness.
Based on his complaint, the Puttur Town Police registered another case under Sections 118(1) and 126(2) read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.
Police investigating both cases
Police officials said both cases are currently under investigation and statements from witnesses are being recorded.
Authorities are also verifying the sequence of events that led to the dispute, the alleged sword brandishing, and the subsequent assault.
Officials said appropriate legal action will be taken against those found responsible once the investigation is completed.
Police have also urged the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to report disputes to authorities so that they can be resolved legally.
Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
