Ullal: Two medical students were injured after the scooter they were travelling on reportedly went out of control and rammed into an electric pole near Kinya on Monday evening, February 17. The impact of the collision was severe enough to snap the electric pole, according to preliminary local reports.
Witnesses said the accident occurred during the evening hours when traffic movement was moderate. The scooter is believed to have skidded or swerved before crashing directly into the roadside pole. The exact cause of the rider losing control has not yet been officially confirmed.
Both rider and pillion rider hurt
Both the rider and the pillion rider sustained injuries in the crash. Passersby and nearby residents rushed to assist the victims immediately after the incident and helped shift them for medical attention. Their condition is reported to be stable, though they suffered multiple injuries due to the force of the collision.
Sources said both injured persons are medical students, with one hailing from Vijayapura district and the other from Bagalkot district. Their names have not been officially released.
The damaged electric pole created a temporary hazard in the area, and authorities were alerted to secure the spot and prevent further risk to motorists and pedestrians. Power supply disruptions were also reported briefly following the incident, before emergency repair measures were initiated.
No police complaint registered yet
Despite the seriousness of the crash and the property damage involved, no formal police complaint had been registered at the time of reporting. Officials indicated that a case may be recorded if a complaint is filed by the injured students, their families, or concerned authorities.
In many self-skid or single-vehicle crashes, cases are sometimes registered only when insurance, compensation, or third-party damage claims are pursued. Since the accident involved damage to public electrical infrastructure, a report may still be filed after assessment by the concerned department.
Rising concern over two-wheeler safety
The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of two-wheeler riders, especially students and young commuters. Road safety observers note that loss of control — due to speed, road surface conditions, sudden obstacles, or braking errors — remains one of the most common causes of scooter and motorcycle accidents.
Experts advise riders to maintain moderate speed, wear helmets, and exercise extra caution on stretches with roadside utilities such as poles and barriers. Immediate reporting of such accidents also helps authorities document risk zones and improve preventive measures.
Further details are awaited pending any official complaint or medical update.
