A potentially fatal road accident ended without injury on Friday after a tyre burst caused a car to crash in Bondel, with the priest involved attributing his safety to faith, prayer and divine protection.
The priest has been identified as Fr. Andrew Leo D’Souza of St. Lawrence Church, who escaped unhurt despite the vehicle sustaining damage.
Sudden tyre burst leads to crash
According to local sources, the incident occurred while Fr. Andrew was travelling within Mangaluru city limits. A sudden tyre burst caused the driver to lose control, resulting in the car crashing off the road. Passers-by rushed to the scene, expecting the worst, but were relieved to find the priest safe and conscious.
The vehicle suffered damage due to the impact, but no injuries were reported. Fr. Andrew did not require hospitalisation and was later taken home as a precaution.
‘Protected under God’s wings’
Speaking to parish members later, Fr. Andrew shared that he had been reflecting on Psalm 91 earlier that day — a passage often referred to as the Psalm of Protection. The psalm speaks of dwelling “under the shadow of the Almighty” and being safeguarded from danger.
“I truly felt protected,” he is said to have remarked, adding that moments like these reaffirm one’s trust in God’s providence.
Intercession of St Lawrence
Parishioners believe the intercession of St. Lawrence, the patron saint of the Bondel church, played a significant role in the priest’s narrow escape. Several faithful described the incident as a testimony of faith, noting that Fr. Andrew is deeply devoted to St Lawrence and often encourages parishioners to seek strength through prayer.
Soon after the news spread, messages of gratitude and prayers poured in from the parish community, thanking God for sparing the priest’s life.
A moment of gratitude and reflection
Church representatives said Fr. Andrew would resume his pastoral duties as scheduled but would spend time in thanksgiving prayer. Many parishioners gathered informally at the church later in the day, offering prayers of gratitude.
The incident has also served as a reminder of both road safety and faith, with the community reflecting that while accidents can strike without warning, trust in God offers strength and hope even in moments of danger.
