Mangaluru: Amid ongoing discussions about a possible cabinet reshuffle in Karnataka and media reports suggesting that Legislative Assembly Speaker U T Khader could be considered for the post of deputy chief minister, Khader on Monday said he has not received any official information regarding such developments. He clarified that he came to know about the reports through the media and remains focused on his current responsibilities as Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly.
No official communication received
Speaking to mediapersons, Khader said that while reports about his possible elevation have been circulating, no one from the government or the party leadership has communicated any such proposal to him.
According to Khader, he has only seen the reports appearing in newspapers, television channels and digital media platforms. He reiterated that he does not have any information beyond what has already been reported publicly.
His remarks come at a time when political discussions surrounding a potential cabinet reshuffle have intensified, with several names being speculated for key positions in the state government. However, Khader maintained that any decision regarding appointments or responsibilities lies entirely with the party and the government leadership.
Focus remains on Speaker’s responsibilities
Khader stressed that he continues to serve as the Speaker and is fully committed to discharging the duties associated with the constitutional office. He said he has no personal aspirations for any specific post and remains content with the responsibility currently entrusted to him.
The Speaker noted that his role requires neutrality and dedication, and he has been carrying out his responsibilities with sincerity. He indicated that his primary focus remains ensuring the smooth functioning of the Legislative Assembly and upholding parliamentary procedures.
His comments reflected a cautious approach, avoiding speculation about political developments while emphasising respect for institutional responsibilities.
Recalled discussions from 2023
Referring to political developments following the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections, Khader recalled that there had been discussions at the time regarding the possibility of him being inducted into the state cabinet as a minister.
However, instead of a ministerial position, he was entrusted with the role of Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Khader said he accepted the responsibility and has since worked diligently to fulfil the expectations associated with the office.
He pointed out that every assignment given by the party carries importance and should be executed with commitment. According to him, positions are temporary, but the quality of work delivered in those positions leaves a lasting impact.
“Work is more important than portfolio”
Highlighting his approach to public life, Khader stated that he does not attach importance to specific portfolios or designations. He remarked that meaningful work and public service matter more than the title attached to a position.
The Speaker said his political journey has always been guided by the objective of serving people and contributing positively wherever responsibility is assigned. He reiterated that if the party or government decides to give any role in the future, the decision would be theirs to make.
His statement is being viewed as an attempt to distance himself from speculation and to avoid being drawn into discussions regarding cabinet positions.
Will speak on politics after leaving Speaker’s office
Khader also indicated that he would refrain from commenting on political matters while holding the office of Speaker. He said he would be able to speak more freely on political issues after demitting the post.
The Speaker’s position is traditionally expected to remain above partisan political debates, and Khader’s remarks underscored his intention to maintain that convention.
Observers note that his comments reflect the balancing act often required of Speakers, who must maintain neutrality despite having active political backgrounds and party affiliations.
Happy with current role
Khader expressed satisfaction with his current responsibilities and said he is happy serving as Speaker. He added that becoming Speaker is a significant achievement for any legislator and that many elected representatives would like the opportunity to hold the position at least once in their political careers.
He also acknowledged the role played by the party, grassroots workers and voters in helping him reach his current position. According to Khader, their support has been instrumental throughout his political journey.
Khader further informed that he would be in Bengaluru for official engagements over the next two days. While speculation over a possible cabinet reshuffle continues, his remarks suggest that he remains focused on his constitutional duties rather than political discussions surrounding future appointments.
Conclusion
With reports linking his name to the deputy chief minister’s post continuing to circulate, U T Khader has made it clear that he has received no official communication regarding such a move. Emphasising his commitment to the Speaker’s office, he reiterated that positions are decided by the party and government, while his priority remains serving the public and fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to him.
