Beltangady: Police have registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) case following allegations of medical negligence in connection with the death of a man who was initially injured in a bull attack. The case was registered after a complaint was filed by a family member alleging that negligent treatment led to the worsening of the victim’s health condition before his eventual death.

Complaint filed by victim’s brother

According to police sources, the complaint was lodged by 36-year-old Nasiruddin P Bin Sufi Beary, a resident of Gerukatte in Beltangady. In his complaint, he alleged that his younger brother, Mohammed Shareef P, aged 35, died due to negligent medical treatment provided after he sustained injuries.

As stated in the complaint, Mohammed Shareef suffered injuries on the night of May 14 after being gored by a bull at his residence.

Following the incident, family members admitted him to Surya Hospital in Uppinangady for medical treatment.

Allegations of negligence raised

The complainant alleged that doctors at the hospital failed to provide proper treatment and that negligence in handling the case led to a decline in Mohammed Shareef’s health condition.

According to the complaint, his condition reportedly worsened after the initial treatment, prompting family members to seek advanced medical care.

Subsequently, Mohammed Shareef was shifted on May 16 to a hospital in Mangaluru for further treatment and specialised medical attention.

Despite undergoing treatment there, he later passed away on May 20.

Police register UDR case

Following the complaint, Beltangady police registered a case under UDR No. 28/2026 under Section 194(3)(iv) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.

Police officials stated that the registration of a UDR case enables authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death and examine the allegations raised by the family.

Officials clarified that the registration of the case does not establish negligence at this stage and that further findings would depend on the outcome of the investigation process.

Medical review process initiated

As part of the investigation, police have initiated communication with the concerned department seeking the constitution of a medical team to examine the allegations made in the complaint.

The medical team is expected to review treatment records and other relevant details before submitting its findings.

Authorities stated that further legal action, if required, would be taken based on the report submitted by the expert committee and the conclusions drawn from the investigation.

The inquiry is currently in progress, and police are expected to proceed further after receiving the medical assessment report.
