Ullal: Ullal police have issued notices to seven students following allegations of ragging, unlawful confinement and threats involving a 21-year-old BSc student from Kerala and his friends at a college within the Ullal police station limits.
The complainant, a native of Kollam district, alleged that senior students threatened him, imposed restrictions on his movement outside the campus and subjected him and his friends to humiliating acts in the name of ragging.
The police action followed a report submitted by the college’s anti-ragging committee. The allegations relate to incidents said to have occurred on October 2, 15 and 22.
Student alleges threats near Deralakatte restaurant
According to the complaint, the first incident occurred on October 2, when two senior students allegedly confronted the complainant near a restaurant in Deralakatte.
The student’s friends were reportedly away at a mosque for prayers at the time.
One of the seniors allegedly threatened to break the student’s limbs and warned him that complaints would be made to the college authorities if he was found outside the campus without wearing his uniform.
The allegations suggest that the confrontation involved threats and attempts to impose restrictions on the student’s conduct outside the college premises.
Students allegedly confined in hotel room
The complaint refers to another incident on October 15. A senior student allegedly called one of the complainant’s friends several times and instructed the group to meet him near the clock tower.
The complainant alleged that he and his friends were subsequently taken to a room in a nearby hotel and confined there. They were allegedly forced to sing songs during the incident.
The complaint has raised concerns about the alleged use of intimidation and confinement against junior students.
Friend allegedly subjected to humiliating acts
A further incident was reported to have occurred on October 22.
According to the complainant, two persons allegedly took one of his friends away on a motorcycle. After returning to the college, the student reportedly told the complainant that he had been taken to a room and subjected to humiliating acts in the name of ragging.
The allegations relate to multiple incidents over a period of three weeks and involve the complainant as well as his friends.
Police issue notices to seven students
Ullal police have issued notices to seven students after receiving the report from the college’s anti-ragging committee.
Further details about the police inquiry, the responses of the students who received notices and any subsequent action have not been provided.
Ragging complaints can involve serious concerns about student safety, intimidation and the misuse of seniority within educational institutions. The allegations in this case will need to be examined by the authorities as part of the inquiry.
