Operations at the Kudroli slaughterhouse in the city were halted four years ago following an order from the National Green Tribunal (NGT). However, it was recently discovered that illegal activities were still taking place on nearby private land. In response to public complaints, Mayor Manoj Kumar conducted an unannounced inspection on Friday.
Accompanied by Deputy Mayor Bhanumathi PS, Town Planning Standing Committee Chairperson Veena Mangala, Health Standing Committee Chairperson Sumithra Kariya, and corporators Manohar Shetty and Jayalakshmi Shetty, the mayor’s team visited the area. While no signs of activity were seen at the main slaughterhouse, a thorough inspection of a nearby private building revealed disturbing findings. The mayor expressed anger at the health officials, questioning their lack of awareness of the illegal activities and demanding swift action.
The area was found to be contaminated, with noticeable signs of improper practices, and unsanitary conditions were observed. The mayor, along with Corporator Manohar Shetty, directed that the premises be closed immediately. In total, five illegal structures were found in the vicinity, and authorities were instructed to clear them right away.
The mayor reassured the public that a new facility was under construction in compliance with NGT guidelines, with necessary arrangements to handle wastewater from the operations properly before it is released into the stormwater drains.
