Mangaluru: Karnataka Legislative Assembly Speaker UT Khader has rejected allegations made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding an alleged delay in administering the oath, asserting that no delay has taken place and that the matter is being handled strictly in accordance with constitutional procedures.

Addressing mediapersons in Mangaluru, Khader said democratic institutions and the parliamentary system function effectively only when there is trust in constitutional processes. He stressed that unnecessary suspicion and political haste could weaken institutional integrity and public confidence.

“Democracy and the parliamentary system must operate on trust. Without trust, the system cannot function effectively,” Khader stated while responding to the controversy that has drawn political attention in recent days.

Speaker refutes BJP allegations

Khader firmly denied accusations that there had been any intentional delay in the oath administration process. Clarifying the sequence of events, he said that no representatives had approached him while he was in Bengaluru regarding the matter.

According to the Speaker, a request seeking additional time was submitted only recently. He explained that the matter involves technical and legal considerations, making it necessary to seek proper consultation and expert opinion before proceeding further.

“As this is a technical matter, it requires consultation and proper opinion before taking a decision,” he said.

Khader maintained that all actions related to the issue are being carried out within the framework of the Constitution and established legal procedures. He reiterated that his office remains committed to neutrality and democratic principles.

“Unique situation” requires legal scrutiny

Describing the current situation as “unique”, the Speaker said decisions connected to constitutional offices and legislative procedures cannot be taken in haste or under political pressure.

He noted that every step must comply fully with constitutional provisions and legal norms to avoid procedural complications in the future. According to Khader, maintaining the sanctity of democratic institutions is of utmost importance.

The Speaker also clarified that he has no involvement in the government’s legal disputes and that his responsibility is limited to ensuring that the Assembly functions according to constitutional guidelines.

Political observers believe Khader’s remarks were aimed at countering criticism from opposition leaders who alleged procedural delays and raised concerns over the handling of the issue.

Governor discussed matter with Speaker

During the interaction with the media, Khader disclosed that the Governor had also spoken to him regarding the matter. However, he did not elaborate further on the details of the discussion.

The Speaker reiterated that there has been no obstruction in the process and assured that the matter would move forward after all necessary consultations and procedural formalities are completed.

“There has been no delay, and there will be no obstruction in the process,” he said.

Khader further stated that if any lapses or irregularities are identified during the course of proceedings, they should be thoroughly investigated to ensure accountability and transparency.

Political attention over Sringeri developments

The controversy has gained wider political significance amid recent developments related to the recounting of postal votes in the Sringeri Assembly constituency constituency.

The issue has sparked intense debate between the ruling Congress and the BJP, with both parties closely monitoring legal and procedural developments connected to the matter.

Political analysts say the controversy may continue to generate discussion in the coming days as parties seek clarity on constitutional procedures and the implications of the recount-related developments.

Meanwhile, Khader’s statement is being viewed as an attempt to reassure the public that the Assembly Speaker’s office is functioning independently and within the limits of constitutional authority.

Focus on institutional integrity

Khader concluded by emphasising the importance of protecting democratic institutions from unnecessary political mistrust. He urged all sides to allow constitutional processes to take their course without creating confusion among the public.

Observers note that the Speaker’s remarks underline the delicate balance between legal procedure, constitutional authority, and political accountability in matters involving legislative administration.

As developments continue, attention is likely to remain focused on how the issue progresses within the constitutional framework and whether further political reactions emerge from opposition parties.
