Mangaluru: The inaugural episode of News Karnataka’s Mangaluru Superstars, a new digital programme by News Karnataka celebrating emerging talent from Dakshina Kannada, has featured 12-year-old drummer Kemril Keith Pinto, offering viewers an insight into his musical journey, stage experiences and philanthropic aspirations.
Hosted by Cleona D’Souza, the programme seeks to identify and showcase young talents who are making their mark in the cultural landscape of Mangaluru and the wider Dakshina Kannada region.
A passion that began with rhythm
Kemril’s musical journey began at an early age when his parents noticed his natural instinct to tap out beats whenever he heard music.
Today, the young drummer is undergoing advanced training under Dr Rishikesh and follows a disciplined daily practice routine. His training goes beyond simply playing rhythms, covering the technical and theoretical aspects of drumming, including counting, grip and playing techniques.
Proper technique is an important part of his training, particularly to avoid unnecessary strain on the ligaments while playing.
Confident performer on the stage
Despite being just 12, Kemril has already performed before live audiences at several prominent venues in Mangaluru, including Swastika Waterfront and Moti Mahal.
He enjoys experimenting with different musical genres and is particularly drawn to complex grooves and fills. For Kemril, one of the most exciting aspects of drumming is the coordination it demands, with both hands and legs working simultaneously to create a single rhythm.
While drumming remains his primary passion, he said he would also be interested in learning the guitar, partly because of its visual appeal.
Music with a purpose
What makes Kemril’s journey particularly noteworthy is that his ambitions extend beyond music.
A charitable trust has been established in his name, with a commitment to contribute 20 per cent of his musical earnings towards helping underprivileged children develop their skills.
The initiative is being supported and guided by his father Norbert Saldanha and the family, with the aim of introducing Kemril to the values of compassion, social responsibility and giving back to society from a young age.
A young talent with a message
The episode also features Kemril explaining the different components of his acoustic drum kit and demonstrating how instruments such as the snare, toms and crash cymbals contribute to a performance.
The episode concludes with a powerful drum performance of Money for Nothing by Dire Straits, showcasing the young musician’s growing technical ability and confidence.
