Mangaluru: Residents in several parts of the city will face a 24-hour disruption in water supply from 6am on Monday to 6am on Tuesday as maintenance work is being undertaken by the civic authorities. The interruption has been announced by the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), which said the temporary shutdown is necessary to carry out critical work on the city’s main water transmission system.

Maintenance work on key water pipeline

According to the MCC, the disruption is being caused due to the replacement of a Non-Return Valve (NRV) on the 1,100-mm-diameter main pipeline. The pipeline is an important component of the city’s water distribution network and transports water from the Thumbe LLPS-2 80 MLD pumping station to different parts of the city.

Officials stated that the replacement work is essential to ensure uninterrupted functioning of the system in the long term. The Non-Return Valve plays a significant role in controlling water flow and preventing reverse movement of water in the pipeline network. Any fault or deterioration in the valve can affect the stability and efficiency of the water supply system.

Civic authorities explained that replacing such a major component requires the temporary shutdown of water pumping and supply operations to ensure the maintenance work can be carried out safely and effectively.

Commercial establishments, restaurants and institutions that depend heavily on daily water consumption may also need to make temporary arrangements to avoid inconvenience.

Public utilities and emergency services are expected to continue monitoring the situation during the maintenance process.

Effort aimed at long-term reliability

While the temporary interruption may inconvenience residents, officials indicated that the maintenance work is intended to improve the reliability of the city’s water supply infrastructure. Large-diameter transmission pipelines are considered critical assets, and timely replacement of components such as valves helps prevent larger technical failures in future.

The MCC has requested public cooperation and patience during the maintenance period. Water supply is expected to resume gradually after the completion of the work and normalisation of the pumping process.

Residents are advised to stay updated through official announcements in case of any extension or changes in the restoration schedule.
