Mangaluru: A heart-rending journey marked by mental illness, separation and uncertainty came to a joyful end as White Doves, Mangaluru, reunited a missing woman from Bilaswara, Uttar Pradesh, with her family after months of treatment and care.
The reunion, recorded as Reunion No. 496, brought tears of joy as Gopi, a mother of two young sons, embraced her family after a prolonged period of separation.
Mental health crisis led to disappearance
According to White Doves, Gopi was living a happy family life until she discovered that her husband was involved in another relationship. The emotional trauma reportedly led to severe psychological distress, frequent conflicts at home and a mental health crisis.
She eventually left home, began dressing as a boy, identified herself as “Don”, and wandered across different states without any sense of direction.
Her journey took her to Pali district in Rajasthan, where a compassionate truck driver found her resting beneath his parked truck. Instead of ignoring her plight, he recorded a video, shared it on social media in the hope of identifying her and safely handed her over to the local police.
Although the video reached her family, they arrived at the police station only to discover that Gopi had already left after boarding a train. A missing person complaint was filed, but as the weeks turned into months, the family gradually lost hope.
White Doves becomes a place of healing
Gopi was eventually found wandering near Valencia in Mangaluru and was brought to White Doves by the Pandeshwar South Police Station.
Initially, she was emotionally disturbed, aggressive and unable to communicate coherently. White Doves provided psychiatric treatment, counselling and compassionate care, helping her gradually recover. Over time, she regained clarity and was able to provide details that enabled the organisation to trace her family.
Emotional reunion after months apart
The reunion at White Doves was filled with emotion as Gopi embraced her brother and other family members after months of uncertainty. The meeting was marked by tears, relief and gratitude, especially as Gopi looked forward to seeing her two young sons again.
White Doves also acknowledged the truck driver’s honesty and humanity, noting that his timely intervention played a crucial role in ensuring Gopi’s safety. The organisation said the case demonstrates how compassion, responsible citizens, timely mental healthcare and coordinated efforts can restore lives and reunite families.
